After reading the previous review written about The Bartlett Mystery, I hesitated in having any desire to read this book. Having just finished it, I can say that I'm certainly glad I took a chance on it.
I've read a lot of stories by Louis Tracy, but this is the first I've read by him that takes place in New York.
Not being sure if Tracy ever traveled there, I was surprised by the geographical accuracy presented.
Would I call Rex, an important character in the book, a "playboy"? If anything, I'd say that his mother is the one who played the role of making ill use of a family inheritance. As the book continues, and the plot fully develops, I find it a pity that the previous review didn't give the book a chance. Things change rapidly after
an initial presentation of the main characters. Other people enter into the rapidly arising conflict that was much more than the rescuing of a "damsel in distress". Anything from a crooked politician to a desperate vagabond. However, my two favorite characters where the two police officers, Steingall and Clancy. You might call them the American versions of Winter and Furneaux. The latter two play a prominent part in a few other books by Tracy that take place in England. As for these duos, they are both as different as day is to night. Yet, they work together like bacon and eggs. One is a little fat, and the other is a little scrambled. That should be enough to satisfy any readers literary appetite.
Finally, one of many quotes I saved from the book that thoroughly entertained me. Tracy at his acme of humor and excitement.
"Voles urged on the car by foot and finger. After him pelted Petch, with set teeth and straining eyes. The
magnificent car, superb in its energies, swept through the night like a fiery dragon of song and fable,
but with a speed never attained by dragon yet, else there would be room on earth for nothing save dragons.
And the motor-cycle leaped and bounded close behind, stuttering its resolve to conquer the monster in front".
Just one of many reasons why I enjoy Louis Tracy's books. I'd say The Bartlett Mystery is one of his best.

The bartlett mystery Louis Tracy 9781176213272 Books Reviews

There is something endearing about these chestnuts from bygone days. This one is set in New York around the turn of the century and is a satisfying mystery with lots of descriptions of society and city scenery.
What a twisted story. Long and drawn out in some places. The police always gets their man in most stories. Winnies story finally comes to life and she lives happily ever after.
I usually like the books from a century ago. But regardless of the century, I'm not a big fan of "tough guy" books or movies. If you are, then you'll probably enjoy this book because it does have a really good plot, is very well-written, and moves along briskly. Yeah, the characters are stereotypically sexist, but we can get by that. But the "tough guy" characters going on and on are just a bit more than this delicate flower can handle -D. Hence, only 3 stars.
This is a story about a girl who does not know who she really is and a lot of villains who do know and want to keep her from finding out. There is more action than mystery solving in this tale.
The setting is in the United States and the detectives are the American counterparts of Winter and Furneaux. They are described much as Winter and Furneaux are and Steingall even refers to Clancy as 'Frog'. There is more action than mystery solving in this tale
This mystery offered many twists and turns, calling for some nail-biting and racing heart. Mr. Tracy always offers some thoughtful reflections on human nature and how one's choices influence the path one takes. I truly enjoyed this adventure/mystery/romance.
*The Bartlett Mystery* is a police procedural inhabited mainly by characters out of F. Scott Fitzgerald, with a few out of O. Henry. They all belong to a rigid class system which works like this The Upper Class has money. Their women wake up at noon, after having spent all night gossiping nastily about each other. The women of the Middle Class are secretaries or work in dress shops. The women of the Lower Class do "manual labor". They are coarse and vulgar, but it's not their fault.

Tracy's language is often prissy.

In spite of these faults, I liked the book. The plot and the characters are original, and I prefer prissiness to the graphic but stereotyped sex scenes of modern mysteries, which often give the impression of having been written by artificial intelligence software of 1960s vintage.
The first two or three chapters are difficult to get through, and I had to go back to re-read them when the first action took place. It becomes evident that a great mystery surrounds Winifred Bartlett. Finding out what and why are the actions of the book. It is worth the rough start to stick with it. I'm fascinated by the crimes and their solutions in the days before modern forensics, communications and conveniences.
